Joseph Dittfurth is in his ninth year of teaching and his sixth year as the Head Band Director at Brabham Middle School in Willis ISD.  He received his Bachelor of Music Education in 2008 from Houston Baptist University and recently received his Masters of Music in Instrument Conducting from Sam Houston State University in May of 2017.  

At Brabham Middle School, Mr. Dittfurth conducts the Honor Band and Concert Band assisting with the Symphonic Band.  He also teaches all beginner brass and percussion classes.  During the last four years the Honor Band has received UIL Sweepstakes ratings as well as numerous first division ratings, Best in Class, and Overall Outstanding Band honors at festivals around the state.  The band program as a whole has also grown by almost 50% in previous years and is continuing to expand.  In addition, Mr. Dittfurth was honored as the 2014-2015 Teacher of the Year for Brabham Middle School and has received many campus awards during his time on campus.  Prior to being Head Band Director, Mr. Dittfurth served as the Assistant Band Director at Brabham Middle School for three years.  Mr. Dittfurth currently resides in Panorama Village, Texas with his loving wife Amber and their three amazing children, Emma, Rebecca, and James.

    • Please bring small mirrors to class if you have one. This helps us see our faces and know what to do with them.

Important Dates/Reminders:

  • 2017-2018 Band Parent Night in the BMS Band Hall 9/18/17 from 6:00-7:00 p.m. 
  • Please ensure students have all materials for class

Honor Band

  • 2017-2018 Band Parent Meeting – The band parent meeting is tonight at 6pm in the BMS Band Hall!  Please try to have a representative there to get important information about this year!
  • Sectionals Continue!  Check with your student on which days they have after-school sectionals.  Sectionals are a once-a-week instrument specific rehearsal where each section of instruments works directly with a band director on fundamentals, region music, scales, and class music.  Sectionals are from 3pm-4pm and will be covering the material specified on their pacing guide.
  • Pep Band – This week we will continue working towards the upcoming pep rallies and football games.  Students will be receiving quite a few “new” pieces to prepare.  Please help keep them accountable for working through music on their own.
  • Practice Card Week 4 is due on Tuesday, September 19th.
  • Reminder:  Foundations for Superior Performance – Students have already begun using their Foundations book for fundamental exercises in class.  Please visit a local music store to purchase the “blue book” at your earliest convenience if you have not already done so.

Good Afternoon Parents!

This week in the BMS Advanced Bands we will be covering the following things:

 

Honor Band

  • Sectionals Begin!  Check with your student on which days they have after-school sectionals.  Sectionals are a once-a-week instrument specific rehearsal where each section of instruments works directly with a band director on fundamentals, region music, scales, and class music.  Sectionals are from 3pm-4pm
  • Foundations for Superior Performance – Students will begin using their Foundations book this week for fundamental exercises in class.  Please visit a local music store to purchase the “blue book” at your earliest convenience if you have not already done so.
  • Trouble – This week we will be working through a new song for the Pancake Supper (October).   This is an arrangement of Taylor Swift’s I Knew You Were Trouble.  Students can visit jwpepper.com to hear a recording to aide in their practice.
  • All band forms (Handbook Acknowledgment, Medical Release) should be turned in.  Please check with your student to see if these have been turned in.
  • Practice Card Week 3 is due on Tuesday, September 12th.

Symphonic Band/Concert Band

  • All band forms (Handbook Acknowledgment, Medical Release) should be turned in.  Please check with your student to see if these have been turned in.
  • Students should be taking care of instrument maintenance outside of class.  This includes preparing their trombone slides, oiling valves, and maintaining their reeds.  All woodwind instruments should have 4 good reeds at all times and should be rotating them daily.
