Ms. Hickey - Reading Lab, Grades 6, 7, & 8

I am so excited about returning to teach Reading Lab at Brabham Middle School in Willis ISD this year, as well as serving as the Campus ESL Coordinator.  This year will be my 21st year to teach, having graduated from Huntsville High School and Sam Houston State University with a B.S. in Academic Studies/English and a Reading specialization.  A lifelong learner, I then continued my education by earning my Master's degree in Educational Leadership with Principal's Certification. I have taught in both Conroe ISD and Cy-Fair ISD, as well as at Al Bayan Bilingual School in the middle-eastern country of Kuwait, one of my most exciting teaching adventures. I look forward to teaching every single day, and I work hard to ensure that each and every one of my students enjoy a positive learning environment and has every opportunity for success.  If you have any questions, concerns, or simply a comment, please feel free to contact me.

Week-at-a-Glance for 9/18/2017

Welcome back and thanks for checking in!

  • Students shared their treasured possessions and created a Social Contract for classroom expectations last week.  They also created beautiful writing and works of art with their “To Thine Own Self-ie Be True” poems.  I can’t wait to display them for Open House on Wednesday, September 27.  I sincerely hope you can make it.
  • This week, classes will begin their rotations for Reader’s Workshop.  Students will rotate through three separate stations (classroom computer lab, independent reading/writing, and small group guided reading) on a 10-day basis:  3-day mini lesson + 3-day mini lesson + 3-day mini lesson + 1 flex day to complete written analysis of progress made during 10-day rotation period.  Expectations for rotations were taught on Friday and will be reviewed frequently.

We'll be reading and writing and learning all week.  Hope you have a great week yourself.

Take care.

Week-at-a-Glance for 9/11/2017

  • Classes will share on Monday a personal 'treasure' (small momento, a treasured item or picture) with the class and explain 'why' it holds a place in their heart.
  • On Tuesday through Thursday, we will complete a "To Thine Own Selfie Be True" project, a combination of poetry and elements of physical characteristics. Pictures of students were taken against a green screen last week for this week's project, but they were also encouraged to send a selfie they preferred to my school email address.  Final pictures will be taken or should be sent by tomorrow in order to begin our project on Tuesday.
  • And finally on Friday, students will be introduced to the Reading Workshop routine that defines our Reading Lab class.  Students will rotate through three separate stations (classroom computer lab, independent reading/writing, and small group guided reading) on a 10-day basis:  3-day mini lesson + 3-day mini lesson + 3-day mini lesson + 1 flex day to complete written analysis of progress made during 10-day period. Expectations for rotations will be taught and reviewed.
We'll be reading and writing and learning all week.  Hope you have a great week yourself.

Take care.
